This book is intended for students and researchers within the information processing field as well as practicians who wish to deepen their understanding of the basic principles of the theory of information systems. Among other things, the book deals with formal methods for description and model construction of large systems in general. It is of interest to all who are working seriously with the analysis and development of large systems.
The basis of this book is, that the function of information systems should be to make information in the system available to all who can benefit from it. In this connection it is emphasized that the user should be independent of the storage structures, which, at any point in time, are inherent in the system.
The importance of the book is illustrated by the fact that the latest development of the generalized database management systems (”data separation”, ”relational data bases”) and the software technology using hierarchic modular design can be regarded as applications of the theory.
