Reverend Sir, H E reason why I address myself to you in this enquiry is, because it is a question which you seem to be in a particular and special manner interested in; and therefore I think it may fairly be presumed, you will think it concerns you carefully to examine it. As Church-Discipline has contributed much to, or at least has been a plausible pretext for, a great deal of that cruelty and barbarity which has been exercised by men professing Christianity towards each other, so this renders ders it necessary to be enquired into, whether such Church-Discipline as is contended for has any foundation in the Christian revelation, that is, in that revelation of God's will which Christ hath delivered to the world for Christians to direct and govern their affections and behaviour by. For as Christ himself laid the foundation of Christian Societies, so surely those rules and directions which he hath given concerning them ought to be regarded and followed in all succeeding ages: and therefore the first and main point to be enquired into is, What Christ has said, and what rules and directions he has given touching this matter. And in order to do this, we must consult the history of Christ's lise and ministry, or those writings which contain the several rules and directions that he hath given with regard to Christian Societies and Church-Discipline; and which I think are as follow. First, in the parable of the tares of the field, Matthew xiii. from verse 23 to verse 31.
